Valeriy Semenovich Frid rodilsya 13 yanvarya 1922 goda v Tomske. V 1940 godu on postupil na scenarnyy fakul'tet VGIKa, gde uchilsya vmeste s Yuliem Dunskim; v 1944 godu, dosrochno sdav e'kzameny po teoreticheskomu kursu, Valeriy Frid ushel dobrovol'cem na front. Zaschitit' diplom on smog tol'ko v 1957 godu, potomu chto posle voyny byl repressirovan i neskol'ko let provel v lageryah i v ssylke. «Sluchay na shahte nomer vosem'» stal pervym fil'mom, postavlennym po scenariyu Valeriya Frida i Yuliya Dunskogo, v tvorcheskom sotrudnichestve s kotorym i byli sozdany vse scenarii, i vyshel on v 1958 godu. Bol'shinstvo fil'mov, snyatyh po napisannym Fridom i Dunskim scenariyam, voshli v «zolotoy fond» sovetskogo kinematografa. Sredi e'tih kartin byli geroicheskie dramy, komedii, e'kranizacii, istoricheskie i priklyuchencheskie lenty, pervyy sovetskiy «fil'm katastrof». Chtoby ponyat', kakoy vklad byl vnesen vydayuschimisya scenaristami v kino, dostatochno perechislit' vsego neskol'ko nazvaniy - «Sluzhili dva tovarischa», «Staraya, staraya skazka», «Ten'», «Sherlok Holms i doktor Vatson», «Skaz pro to, kak car' Petr arapa zhenil», «E'kipazh», a v chisle rezhisserov, s kotorymi oni rabotali, - Aleksandr Mitta, Rolan Bykov, Evgeniy Karelov, Grigoriy Chuhray, Nadezhda Kosheverova, Igor' Maslennikov, Sergey Mikae'lyan.
